THE RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY OF THE THIN SLICE TECHNIQUE:OBSERVATIONAL RESEARCH ON VIDEO RECORDED MEDICAL INTERACTIONS byTANINA S. FOSTERMay 2014Advisor: Dr. Shlomo SawilowskyMajor: Evaluation and ResearchDegree: Doctor of PhilosophyIntroduction: Observational research using the thin slice technique has beenroutinely incorporated in observational research methods, however there is limitedevidence supporting use of this technique compared to full interaction coding. Thepurpose of this study was to determine if this technique could be reliability coded, ifratings are consistent between the first, second and third slice, and if they arerepresentative of full interactions. Methods: Three 30-second thin slices were sampled from the beginning, middleand end of a full-length video-recorded patient/physician interaction collected a part of alarger research study in a low income urban primary care clinic. Thin slice excerpts andfull interactions were rated on five dimensions (liking, attention, coordination, trust andrapport) using a nine point Likert scale ranging from ‘none’ to ‘high’ by eightindependent coders. Reliability was assessed using the intraclass correlation measure, validity of thin slices was assessed using the Friedman test (non-parametric equivalentof the Repeated measures ANOVA), and the comparison of thin slice coding to full

Reliability and validity of nonverbal thin slices in social interactions.
Four studies investigated the reliability and validity of thin slices of nonverbal behavior from social interactions including (a) how well individual slices of a given behavior predict other slices in the same interaction; (b) how well a slice of a given behavior represents the entirety of that behavior within an interaction; (c) how long a slice is necessary to sufficiently represent the enti...
متن کاملPsychometric Properties of the Persian Translation of Video Gaming Addiction Test
Introduction: The current study aims to measure the validity, reliability, and psychometric properties of the Persian translation of the Video Gaming Addiction Test (VAT). Materials and Methods: A total of 280 young men (14-20 years old) (mean ± SD age: 17.22 ± 1.8 years), including excessive gamers and normal subjects, entered the study. They answered VAT, Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and Conne...
متن کاملThe Relationship Between Gingival Biotypes and Dentopapillary Complex: An Observational Study
Background and Aim: Gingival biotype is a principal component in restorative and implant procedures, especially in the aesthetic region. Immediate determination of the gingival biotype by the clinician could lead to a more successful outcome, especially during implant placement in the aesthetic zone. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible relationship between gingival biotypes and ...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Validity and Reliability of the Persian Version of Iowa Satisfaction with Anesthesia Scale in Iran
Introduction: The interaction between the doctor and the patient achieved when the physician is able to communicate effectively with the patient. Iowa Satisfaction with Anesthesia Scale is a tool for this purpose. Given that ISAS is originally in English and understudy in Iran, we decided to translate this scale into Persian and evaluate its validity and reliability.Purpose: Our aim in this stu...
متن کاملThe Validity and Interrater Reliability of Video-Based Posture Observation During Asymmetric Lifting Tasks
OBJECTIVE The objective was to evaluate the validity and interrater reliability of a video-based posture observation method for the major body segment angles during asymmetric lifting tasks. BACKGROUND Observational methods have been widely used as an awkward-posture assessment tool for ergonomics studies. Previous research proposed a video-based posture observation method with estimation of ...
